The new Honda Jazz that we test-drove inSingapore will come to India soon. But unlike the Singaporean Jazz that comes with 1.3-litre and 1.5-litre petrol engines, the Indian Jazz models will get the same 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines as the Honda Amaze.Let’s start with the diesel engine. The 1.5-litre unit belts out about 99bhp in the Amaze, City and Mobilio. Assuming Honda doesn’t tweak it, it will make the Jazz the most powerful premium diesel hatchback this side of theVolkswagen Polo GT TDI. The i-DTEC engine is about excellent drivability rather than outright punch, and also delivers great fuel economy. Honda will most likely couple the Jazz with the Amaze’s five-speed manual. But Honda could also go with the set-up in the City, the same engine mated to a more efficiency-oriented, six-speed manual. As for the petrol version of the India-bound car, its 87bhp i-VTEC engine is the same as the previous Jazz sold in the country. It will come with a five-speed manualand there could be an automatic as well. Currently, the Amaze and Brio are sold with a five-speed torque converter unit in India, though the Jazz models abroad are available with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) too.The CVT on this Jazz 1.3 works well to keep the engine efficient and quiet. In fact, refinement during city drives is great and noise, vibration and harshness levels are low. Sure, when pushed hard, the revolutions increase a lot before a corresponding rise in road speed but the paddle shifters aid in driving it like a more conventional automatic. It’s on imperfect roads that the Jazz’s suspension gets aworkout, and there’s a bit of pitching. Stability, though, is good and even at speeds above 100 kilometres per hour, the Jazz feels planted. Over fast and slow lane changes, the electric power steering seems adequately weighted too. However, when driven hard around corners, the Jazz doesn’t come across as an engaging driver’s car. The steering feels lazy. You just don’t get that sense of connection you would in a Swift, Punto or even Polo. There’s also plenty of body roll, which just hurts the driving experience further.Moving on to the details, the front seats are slightly flat but comfortable. The cabin feels familiar largely owing to the fact that lots of elements are shared with the City. The chunky steering, the instruments and the basic layout of the centre console are all very similar. There are a number of generous cubbies for storing small items too. Overall quality is also pretty much the same, with hard but seemingly long-lasting plastics in use throughout the cabin. But there are some differences. The Jazz’s asymmetricaldashboard extends further forward towards the wind-screen, the portion above the glovebox is more layered, there’s a cup-holder at the driver’s end of the dashboard and there are generally fewer silver plastics all around. In most markets overseas, it also comes with a 7-inch touch screen, but top-end variants of the Indian version will, in all probability, use the City’s 5-inch unit. Honda has learnt the hard way that Indian buyers like features, so it’s likely to sell the Jazz in fairly loaded form. One of the issues, though, is the driver’s vision past the thick A-pillar. The blind spot easily hides large vehicles and is bound to be a problem on crossroads. Otherwise, visibility is good, be it out of the front or rear wind-screens. The large windows allow lots of light in and make the cabin look larger than it already is.The rear-seat space is good enough to humble many larger mid-size sedans. There is enough headroom and legroom, and there’s sufficient width to seat three abreast. Unfortunately, the middle-row seat is hard and not all that comfortable. The other two occupants might find their well-cushioned seats slightly short on thigh support, but will like the gentle upward slope of the floorthat serves as a natural footrest. That upward slope is thanks to the relatively small 40-litre fuel tank sitting under the front seats rather than in the traditional position under the rear seats. The positive of this set-up is that the Jazz’s cargo-holding capacity is flexible. The rear seat can be folded flat and also flipped up to fit tall items, and the front passenger seat can also be folded to make space for long items. There’s also an interesting feature for the chauffeur-driven. Remove the front-seat headrests; push the backrests fully till they meet the rear-seat base, and whatyou get is a proper recliner.Talking about the design, the new Jazz retains the basic silhouette of the previous car. The large, angular headlights that gel into the grille look attractive, while the large air dam lower down on the bumper adds aggression to the front. There’s also a strong belt line that runs across the body. Sadly, the mass of metal above the rear wheels makes the car look like it has tiny shoes despite its 15-inch rims. At the tail too, the reflectors that run up the wind-screen seem like an unnecessary add-on while the faux air vents lower down on the bumper look out of place. The practical elements, though, are the tailgate that extends low on the bumper and the doors that open nice and wide. The Honda Jazz is a car that focuses on practicality and ease of use. Although it’s not really a driver’s car, it is easy to live with and brilliantly versatile. The cabin is spacious and comfortable, and is also expected to be a lot better equipped this time around.Expect Honda to launch the Jazz at a competitive price. Localization will help it price the car closer to rivals suchas the Volkswagen Polo and Hyundai Elite i20. If anything, a good price tag will only add more desirabilityto the hatchback when it comes in March

Maruti Suzuki's Upcoming Cars in India
With competition heating up in the Indian automobile industry, the country's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki India, is planning to bring in several new and facelifted products in the market in next 12 months. Along with a couple of facelifts, we'll see MSI entering some new segments including sub-compact SUV, compact crossover and premium hatchback. So if you are planning to buy a Maruti in near future, here's the list of the cars that MSI will launch.
Maruti Swift Dzire Facelift
After launching the updated Swift hatchback, Maruti Suzuki is contemplating the facelifted Swift Dzire. Though, there will be no major exterior or interior changes. Of all the changes the Dzire will receive, the most notable ones will be a single chrome slat on the grille, chrome fog lamp inserts, revised bumper and redesigned headlamps. Coming to the side profile, it will remain almost unchanged except for the new alloy wheels.
Just like the Swift facelift, the Dzire too is expected to become more feature-rich than before. The mid-life facelift will get new seat upholstery, push start-stop button, reverse parking sensor, electrically adjustable outside rear view mirrors, steering mounted audio controls, new Bluetooth compatible music system and few other features.
Expected Launch - December 2014
Expected Price: Rs. 5 lakh - Rs. 8 Lakh
Maruti XA Alpha
Ever since its unveiling at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo, the XA Alpha has been one of the most-anticipated Maruti Suzuki vehicles that will finally be rolled out in 2015. In last couple of years, we have seen the kind of response received by Ford EcoSport, Renault Duster and Nissan Terano, and we know how Maruti can change the game with a really capable product in the segment. The XA Alpha is likely to be powered with the fiat-sourced 1.3-litre multijet diesel and 1.4-litre petrol mills.
Expected Launch - Second Half of 2015
Expected Price: Rs. 6.50 lakh- Rs. 10 lakh
Maruti SX4 S-Cross
This is yet another product that Maruti Suzuki is betting big on, though the segment it will enter isn't as big in numbers as others. Cars that we currently have in the hatchback-based crossover segment are VW Cross Polo, Toyota Etios Cross and Fiat Avventura. However, carmakers like Maruti and Hyundai with some good products can generate volumes in newly formed segments as well. Whereas Hyundai will launch an i20 based crossover, Maruti is testing SX4 S-Cross for India.
The crossover will resemble to the European SX4 hatchback based 'S-Cross'. However, it will get some exterior and mechanical updates. The SX4 S-Cross is expected to feature a new pair of engines - a 1.3-litre, 92bhp multijet diesel engine and a 1.4-litre, 94bhp petrol engine.
Expected Launch - Early 2015
Expected Price: Rs. 6 lakh - Rs. 8 lakh
Maruti Celerio Diesel
Buoyed by the success of Celerio's petrol model in the Indian market, MSI is now working on a diesel avatar of the entry-level hatchback. As we reported earlier, Maruti has been developing a small 800cc diesel engine for its entry-level hatchbacks and an LCV. It is expected to carry India's most fuel efficient engine that will return an impressive 35Km/l of mileage. However, the power output won't be that impressive with 50-55bhp of maximum power. The Celerio Diesel will compete against Chevrolet Beat Diesel and Tata's upcoming compact hatchback.
Expected Launch - First Half of 2015
Expected Price: Rs. 4.5 - Rs. 5.0 lakh
Maruti YRA Premium Hatchback
Aiming to strengthen its premium hatchback market, Maruti will introduce the all new YRA to take on the recently launched Hyundai Elite i20. To be positioned above Swift, it will share its design cues with the former. The YRA will feature a wide honeycomb grille with V-shape chrome surround at the bottom, while rest of the styling is quite conservative. The daytime running lamps now come as a standard offering. It will be wider and more spacious than the Swift. The Maruti YRA is expected to be offered in two petrol (a 1.2-litre and a 1.4-litre) and a diesel (1.3-litre) engine option. The diesel engine, however, is similar to the Swift, it will be tuned to offer more power.
Expected Launch - Mid 2015
Expected Price: Rs. 5.5 lakh - Rs. 9 lakh
How Is Car Technology Keeping Us Safe And Secure
In the world of modern technology, the recent and latest progression is only as good as the next thing coming down the line. The Indian automobile industry is continuously bringing us newer technologies to keep us safe and secure. In-car technology has come a long way in a short time. In-car technology is being used to avoid mishaps associated with the changing of lanes and blind spots. There are reverse cameras with cross-traffic warning now available to avoid problems while reversing the car out of a parking spot
In-car technology does not only prevent collisions, but also helps as parking assistant system. These safety systems bid both audio and visual directions to alert the driver that his car is too close to nearby parked cars. Smart automobile technology in cars like voice activation is same as in modern smartphones, which is now used in car audio and travelling devices. Some of the automobile technology in cars are multi-point fuel injection, which manages to use even the last drop of fuel, and ensures that the car delivers a better mileage. Common rail direct injection offers 25 percent more power than normal direct injection engine does and gives mileage of around twenty-four kilometres to one litre of diesel.
Owing to new car technology in India, the level of safety features in cars has increased. Advancements like adjusting journey control automatically slugs the car down in traffic, and the car accelerates too and continue with its increased speed until the traffic situation changes again. Another safety feature in car is Collision Avoiding System, an autonomous braking system which gets active when the driver isn’t responding to the warning. Other safety features in cars include backup camera that generally display in rear-view mirrors, adaptive headlights and many more. Some of the new automobile technology in cars in India is the “In Car Journey Recorder”. It is the latest invention by Nikkai.
Another latest technology is Smart Pedal Technology, which is built into a car to prevent the lethal accidents. This Smart Pedal orders the engine to ignore the accelerator if the brakes and gas pedal are pushed at the same time, and another is Five Star Shine, which is a unique paint safeguard system that keeps the car clean for five years.

The Growing love for Crossover Vehicles in India
Indian roads have always been ideal for hatchbacks and sedans. For years, these models have dominated the Indian roads. Later on with time, SUVs started making a place for themselves and thus, provided a variety in the types of cars that ply on Indian roads and weather conditions. However, the latest trend shows the growth of a new type of automobiles in the country. This is mainly because of a particular segment of car buyers who are looking to make a new decision while purchasing their next car. Sometimes categorised as the crossover, these cars are also known as the CUVs or the Crossover Utility Vehicles. As easily deciphered from the name, these have their traces from regular SUVs or the modern MUVs, but are slightly different in a few aspects.
There are certain aspects, which can be noticed to identify a CUV or a crossover. However, the most important one is that it is based on the platform of a regular hatchback with characteristics and features that are more towards a normal SUV. So, a car, which has the features and specifications of a SUV or a MUV despite being based on the platform of a hatchback, can be termed as a crossover.
There were a number of instances in the past where CUVs made a debut in the Indian market. The first such marked introduction was by the company Fiat, which launched their first crossover vehicle in the form of Palio. Though, it could not attain the popularity or the market that was expected, the Italian company is hoping to try its fortunes in this segment with the all-new Avventura. This model was initially showcased at the Delhi Auto Show held in 2014. It is more of an expansion of the Punto, which is a premium hatchback of Fiat. Apart from that, the car has been given an extra cladding to give a muscular look.
There are a couple of other models, which can be identified as crossovers like the Volkswagen Polo and Toyota Etios, the cross versions. Volkswagen has not made many differences in its crossover model as compared to the hatchback. Neither the cross model gets a grille guard, nor it has a beefy appearance so characteristic of CUVs. On the contrary, the car is a comfortable choice in respect of riding quality and handling, as are the rest of the models from Volkswagen.
Other upcoming models that have tried their hands in the CUV concept are Tata Aria, Mahindra XUV500 and Quanto. Even Maruti is looking for XA Alpha, which might be their first venture in the crossover market. Renault has an immensely successful model in this segment with Duster, so is Ecosport from Ford, which has set the streets on fire. The growing trend and market has given the automobile manufacturers the scope to test and try their hands into the crossover market.
Toyota Aygo to Take On Maruti Alto K10, Hyundai Eon?
Toyota's plans of working along with Daihatsuto develop small cars for the Indian market. Tpossibility of Yaris and Aygo making good hatchback options for India. Today, we accessed information about Toyota India importing three units of its small hatchback, Aygo, in India for research & development (R&D) purposes from its Czech Republic- and UK-based facilities (Source - Zauba). This could be Toyota's small hatchback for India that will take on the likes of Maruti Alto K10, Chevrolet Beat, Hyundai Eon 1.0L and other 1000cc engined cars.
The Aygo is a 5-door hatchback that features a 1.0-litre petrol motor capable of churning out a maximum power output of 68bhp and 95Nm of torque. Power is transmitted to the front-wheels via a 5-speed manual gearbox. The European version of the car also features an AMT, which, we think, might make its way to India, considering the rising popularity of AMT-powered cars here.
The challenge, however, for Toyota will be pricing it competitively. To do this, the company will have to localise most of its components, including the engine and gearbox. If the new hatchback does arrive in the country, it will be positioned below the Etios Liva - which is currently the cheapest Toyota car in India.
